In Praise of Bermuda Coaches

By Rick McCharles, Gymnastics Canada

Having visited Bermuda clubs many times over the past 7 years, one thing has become clear — it’s difficult to hire new coaches. And it’s challenging to keep good coaches.

It’s an expensive nation. Out somewhere in the Atlantic. 😀 And many young people leave for continuing education, some not returning.

Coaching is a topic close to my heart. I edit the most popular site online — GymnasticsCoaching.com — and I lead coach education workshops for Gymnastics Canada and the International Gymnastics Federation.

My best advice for Bermuda clubs is to put a high priority on supporting your coaches.

Be clear and comprehensive in your contracts with both full-time and part-time employees. For example, what hours will be paid when coaches are at competitions?
